Breakdown of number of TikTok users by country

According to the latest data on TikTok’s advertising reach, the United States is home to the majority of TikTok users worldwide, with more than 140.6 million TikTokers residing there.

Analysts say TikTok’s popularity in the US skyrocketed following its merger with Musical.ly in 2018. Prior to that, there were fewer than 10 million monthly active users on the platform. But in the months following the merger, the number of TikTok users grew exponentially. It surpassed Facebook, Instagram, Snapchat, and YouTube in number of downloads, and even prompted Facebook to launch a rival service, Lasso. Incidentally, three of the five most-followed people on TikTok are also located in the US.

The country with the second-highest number of TikTok users is Indonesia. The most populous country in Southeast Asia has 106.9 million TikTok users. Despite a temporary ban in 2018 by the government, the social media app is extremely popular among Indonesians.

Third on the list ranking TikTok users by country is Brazil, with nearly 75 million TikTokers located there. It is also one of TikTok’s fastest-growing markets, as the app invests heavily in marketing campaigns there.

This is followed by Russia, with around 56.3 million TikTok users. TikTok is the fifth-most-popular social media app there, behind WhatsApp, VK, Instagram, and Telegram.

Rounding out the top five countries where TikTok users are located is Mexico, home to 51.3 million users.

Here’s a look at numbers six to 10 on the list ranking TikTok users by country:

  1. Vietnam: 49.6 million
  2. Philippines: 42.7 million
  3. Thailand: 39.5 million
  4. Turkey: 30.8 million
  5. Saudi Arabia: 25.2 million

The breakdown of TikTok users by country shows that, despite launching only in 2016, TikTok has managed to penetrate some of the world’s most populous countries across various continents.
