How Many People Use the Internet in 2019?

Internet users in 2019

How many people use the internet? The short answer is: there are currently 4.333 billion active internet users across the globe.

But to fully understand the impact of this number, we must put it into context. That, we need to answer another question: how many people have access to the internet? Let’s look at some worldwide statistics on internet users.

The current 4.333 billion active internet users represent 56 percent of the global population and the latest figures show that the number of internet users has been increasing in recent years. Not just that, this growth is greatly outpacing that of total population growth.

The number of new internet users in the world per day over the past 12 months is averaging at nearly one million. In other words, every single day in the past year, 900,000 people accessed the internet for the first time in their lives.

This growing number of internet users in the world equates to a growth rate of 8.2 percent. Today, there are 320 million more internet users in the world than there were a year ago. This growth is more than eight times faster than the overall population growth over the past year, which came in at 1 percent.

Matching growth rates are also reflected in the number of active social media users and mobile social media users, both of which have registered a 7.8 percent increase since the third quarter of 2018. The number of unique mobile users is, however, growing at a much slower rate, with just a 2.5 percent increase over the past year.

Of all internet users in the world, nearly half come from Asia. But that is also the region with the largest group of unconnected population in the world. In fact, it’s estimated that in South Asia alone, more than one billion people remain without an internet connection. This should come as no surprise, given that Asia is the most populous continent in the world and home to nearly 60 percent of the global population.

After Asia, the region with the second-highest number of internet users is Europe, with 16.3 percent of all internet users in the world, followed by Africa (11.9 percent), Latin America/Caribbean (10.1 percent), North America (7.4 percent), the Middle East (3.9 percent), and Oceania/Australia (0.6 percent).
